The goal I have for my students is that they learn music, but most importantly that they have a positive introduction to music and develop a love for music and an outlet to express themselves.

About Teacher Michelle

Michelle MacArthur has been enjoying music for as long as she can remember and playing the piano since she was 7. In addition to the piano, she learned to play the guitar, ukulele, recorder, clarinet, hand bells and many rhythm instruments. Michelle did her training for piano through the Royal Conservatory of Music (Piano) and enhanced her music education by becoming a certified Music For Young Children Teacher in 1997 after attending university. She has been teaching music for over a decade and loves kids even more than she loves music. Michelle's studio is located in Kelowna where she maintains a busy schedule offering the Music For Young Children Program. She is a huge advocate for music education and believes that exposing children to music from an early age is essential. Michelle feels strongly that a child be given opportunity to learn an instrument at a young age -- her bias is the piano as it gives the basis for most any instrument. Her heart is that children develop a love for music and a healthy outlet that will serve them a lifetime of expression and enjoyment.

Testimonials

"Teacher Michelle delivers the MYC® Program with enthusiasm, zeal and fun that encourages my son to practice and enjoy playing the piano. She has rapport and an ease with the children that keeps their attention and keeps them focused to cover a lot of material in one hour. The outcome is pride and self esteem in each of the children in our group, and a desire to improve and perform to the best of their ability. Teacher Michelle is an inspiration to our kids!"

- Shonna Fox, mom of Brett

"Teacher Michelle has an amazing ability to foster each student's learning style, to help them see the joy in music, and to know when and how to best encourage their spirit. The MYC® program itself is fantastic - I, as a parent, have learned more about music than in all those music lessons of my own."

- Clare Morrison Kilburn, mom of Jessye & Reid

MYC Students

The MYC® program itself is very well rounded and although it is keyboard (piano) based, it includes singing, rhythm ensembles, composition, listening activities and theory.

Parents play an integral role in the program. They are involved both in class and at home ensuring students understand concepts and practice correctly. Many parents tell me how they have always wanted to learn music or piano and now they have the opportunity without having to pay extra for their own lessons!! The success of the program is the joint effort of parents, students and teachers.

For more information regarding class schedules and tuition fees, please refer to the Schedule page.

PERFORMANCES / RECITALS:
Christmas Recital: All students are encouraged to play in the studio at our Christmas Recital. This provides an excellent opportunity for students to perform in a small group setting in a familiar environment.

Spring Recital: The spring recital is held in an auditorium on a grand piano and allows each class the opportunity to play a group rhythm ensemble together on stage followed by solo piano performances. Students are on stage together as a class first which allows them to perform individually with greater ease. Many students don't even get nervous (though the parents and their teacher often do!!)

Graduating Moonbeams III students are presented with other additional performance opportunities. These venues are fabulous experiences allowing greater preparation for Festivals and Exams.

CARNIVALS
The final lesson in May is a group music carnival. This is an extremely popular event which allows classes to move from one music station to another and review concepts through a game at each activity.

PRACTICE TIPS
  • Practice reviewing flashcards once before dinner.
  • Use your tin sheets in the car to review notes.
  • Write musical stories and use crazy invented instruments to tap them out!
